Hillene G. Unangst, 63, died February 1, 2017 at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX, after a one year battle with cancer. Memorial services were held on February 23 at Emmanuel Presbyterian Church in Bedford, Texas. Services will also be held on April 8 at 11:00 at the First Reformed Church in Hull, Iowa.


She was born on October 24, 1953 in Sioux Center, IA to Asa & Wilhelmina (Vande Kamp) Kraayenbrink. She grew up on farms near Hull, IA. She graduated from Boyden-Hull High School in Hull, IA in 1971. She attended Northwestern College and then graduated from Iowa State University in 1975 with a degree in Fashion Merchandising / Business. After college, she moved to Selma, AL for a couple years where she worked at JC Penneys. From there she moved to Wichita Falls, TX and worked as Operations Manager at Target. She married John F. Unangst, Jr in 1984 in Wichita Falls. After their wedding, they lived in Arizona for a few months and then Alamagordo, NM, where she worked as General Manager at TGY & McCrory from 1985-1990. In 1990, they moved to Colleyville, TX where she lived until her death. During the years in Colleyville, she worked as General Manager at Bizmart from 1990-1993, then Mervyn’s from 1993-2005, and then Sears from 2005-2016. During her time working at Sears, she spent one year in Austin, TX.


As a manager, she received many awards/recognitions such as --- “Best New Talent” at TGY & McCrory in 1988; Exceeded operational goals within six months of starting at Bizmart; Named Regional Store Leader of the Year in 1998 at Mervyn’s; Delivered highest company customer service rating for 5 years at Mervyn’s. At Sears, her facility was a regional training center for new managers. She mentored many employees throughout her years and helped them succeed in management. She was loved and respected by her employees and co-workers. Some of their comments include – “Wonderful Boss”, “Awesome Boss”, “Very Best Manager I could have ever asked for”, “Took care of her team at Mervyn’s”, “Great Manager to work for”, “Wonderful Person”, “Loved by her Sears family”, “She will always go down as my favorite manager”, “She made many contributions in her leadership role with Mervyn’s”, “She was my rock during a very difficult time in my personal life,” “Best Manager a person can have”, “I’ve learned a lot from her”, “Awesome Lady”, “One of the most positive & true friends I have ever known”, “She was definitely firm but ALWAYS fair and everyone respected her and her door was always open if anyone every needed to talk”, “Wonderful lady and dearly loved”, “Lady of Class, Honor, Knowledge and, above all, Courage”, “One of the sweetest & kindest souls, with just the right amount of Sass & Pizazz”.


She was a strong woman. She was a two-time cancer survivor over the past 32 years in1985 & 1997. In 1997, she and her father were both fighting cancer together and had a very special bond. She had a special love for cats, which started when she was a little girl on the farm in Iowa. Through the years, after leaving the farm, she has had 6 cats – Spook & Dixie, Mazey & Bixby and, currently, Ollie & Lacey. She enjoyed traveling with her friends, sister and husband. She and her forever friend, Cindy, took annual trips together to Kauai for 11 years. Kauai was her favorite vacation destination. She also traveled with friends to other destinations such as Alaska, New York, & Black Hills. She made frequent visits to Iowa to see her mother & sister and to Florida to visit her mother-in-law.


She is survived by her husband, John; her mother, Wilhelmina Kraayenbrink of Hull, IA; her sister, Doris Scholten of Sheldon, IA; her forever friend, Cindy (David) Stoeckel, Landrum, SC; her sister-in-law, Barbara (Boomer) Everest of Dunnellon, FL; four nieces & nephews; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, co-workers & employees. She was preceeded in death by her father, Asa Kraayenbrink; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, John & Jean Unangst; her brother-in-law, Harold Scholten; and her maternal & paternal grandparents.
