Barbara Jean Tolbert, 63, of Vancouver, Washington passed away quietly on November 3, 2016. Barbara was born in New York to William and Kelva Altman on July 4, 1953. A firecracker from the start, she was active in choir and theater in school.  Although health issues prevented her from completing a degree in Music, she shared her gift of singing as a worship leader, and among family and friends.

She loved children and believed that “there are few things on this earth sweeter than the face of a child,” which ultimately served as the motto for her business SweetFace Face Painting. Countless “sweet faces” were made even sweeter by her brushstrokes at fairs, corporate parties and local events. Her talents contributed to her business winning the Best of Vancouver Award in 2013.

Above all else, she was a devoted follower of Jesus Christ, and was a living testimony to His miraculous grace and blessing in her life. Despite difficult circumstances and chronic health issues, she was a joyful and loving servant.  Her perseverance in the face of struggle was an incredible tribute to her Provider and Savior.  She served at the Vancouver Healing Rooms, where she found comfort in ministering to those in need of prayer and healing. Her ministry also extended to family and friends needing support and encouragement.

Barbara is preceded in death by her parents William and Kelva, and older brother Jay Altman. Barbara is survived by her younger brother Jeff (Nancy) Altman of Vancouver; her three daughters Janelle (Jeff) Hildahl of Spokane, Melissa (Rodolfo) Galindo of Vancouver, and Chelsea (Richard) Dean of Vancouver;  grandchildren Tristan, Isaac, Alia, Ryan, Adrian, Marianna, Elijah, and Anjuli; nieces Kimberly (Osmon) Babury, Angela Hartford, Rachel Clark; nephews Dameon Hartford and Michael Bieker all of Vancouver; and innumerable cherished friends including, but not limited to, her best friend Rosalie (Carl) Teuscher of Vancouver.

She was a dedicated and exuberant mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend; her legacy lives on through her poems, songs and passionate spirit. We will miss her many talents, compassion and singing, but we are certain she is finally singing for her Lord without limitations.

“Each life that found its way into mine; no matter how short the time; affected me in some way; good or bad, whether foe or friend of mine. And You had sent them all to me. Yes, You’ve chosen everyone to fulfill some purpose in Your plan, before my life here had begun.”
